Energy Security is
National Security

We make progress by
providing energy security
for America

Reliable fuels, most of which are made right here at home with crude oil from North America, help keep our economy moving, our communities safe and our nation prepared in an unpredictable world. Energy security means being able to access gasoline, diesel and jet fuel where and when we need it, even when the global energy market gets disrupted.

The Spotlight

Energy security is about more than producing crude oil. It’s about having the ability to turn that crude oil into the fuels we rely on every day.

"America’s petrochemical industry is critically important to U.S. manufacturing. Almost everything we rely on today, from healthcare to technology, they all come from petrochemicals."

Chet

President and CEO, AFPM

"U.S. energy security is not just crude oil production. When a refinery processes crude oil, they create gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. Without these refineries, the U.S. would be dependent on much less stable regimes around the world."

Susan

Chief Industry Analyst, AFPM

"As recent events have made clear, energy security is national security. Our energy security is the envy of most countries around the world. And a big reason for that is our domestic refining industry."

Producing energy is
only the first step

Refineries turn oil into the fuels that power everyday life — fuels that get people to work and school, that deliver goods to market and help emergency responders get where they’re needed. Without a strong domestic fuel refining industry, the United States would have to rely far more on other countries to turn energy into usable fuels.

Having abundant crude oil and the ability to make gasoline, diesel and jet fuel here at home gives the United States a stronger footing when global systems are disrupted.

Here in the United States, we produce more fuels than we consume, meaning we make enough to meet our own needs and can still send products to our allies abroad.

Reliability when it
matters most

Global conflict, natural disasters and supply chain disruptions can all threaten access to energy and fuels.

In an uncertain world, domestic refining is a strategic asset that strengthens our resilience, security and preparedness when it matters most.
